A couple of guys came out from the backyard gate, which was my way into the party without going through the photo booth. A mixture of anger and disappointment bubbled inside of me as I entered through the backyard and saw every single person with a date. It was more like a Valentine’s party than a summer party. My thoughts bounced between Tristan and Alex, not knowing which one made me agonize less. Why did I have to care about real guys? As I made my way through the wet grass, I needed to keep my clumsiness to a minimum. One trip and the white would get stained with mud, and it would be embarrassing.

I tiptoed strategically toward the deck, but still my shoes ended up muddy. Once I reached the back door, I tried to clean my shoes against the doormat but eventually decided to take them off and carry them as I headed inside. Maggie would never forgive me for going into her room or the upper area with muddy shoes.

This was not the entrance I had anticipated, but at least I was in. I searched for her quickly on the lower level, but the more I looked at couples around me, the lonelier I felt. I couldn’t believe Tristan would do this to me. He seemed to be different. He seemed excited about coming to this party with me, but perhaps I was wrong.

I ventured upstairs, passing people standing by the huge round staircase. Holding my shoes and Maggie’s present in one hand, I knocked on Maggie’s closed door. There was no reply, so I turned the knob to walk in, but Mia’s face blocked my way.

“June, where’s your date?” she asked, looking for someone behind me.

“Somewhere around, socializing,” I lied, and took a step into Maggie’s room. A wick-pop was not going to stand in my way. I looked around Maggie’s room, but she wasn’t there. Her bathroom door was closed, and the light could be seen at the bottom of the door, so I knocked.

“Maggie? It’s me, June. I brought your birthday present. The one that finally arrived,” I said, but there was no answer.

I pressed my ear against the door. Trying to block out the loud music coming from the lower level, I could hear her sniffling. Dane must have told her. At least that scumbag had kept his word.

I couldn’t imagine how devastated she must feel. I was annoyed by Tristan and Alex, but it was no comparison to what freaking stupid Dane had done to her. I wanted to be next to her. It was my duty as her best friend to stand by her side against all heartbreak.

“Maggie, I’m coming in,” I said, trying to open the door. It was unlocked, but the other wick-pop blocked my way.

“Maggie can’t talk right now,” Alessandra said in a serious and somehow victorious tone. “You can leave the present on her bed.”

Before I could say anything, she closed the door on me, and this time she locked it.
